Arrival in Beijing

This blog exists mostly due to the suggestion of Jinghua Qian. I didn't really take her request seriously until I realized that by writing about our trip on this blog would save me the effort of writing repetitive emails to everyone.

On Friday we flew from Newark and arrived in Beijing on Saturday at 3pm. We had had very little to eat on the airplane (always bring your own food!), so we grabbed a little food at a fast food place in the airport. When I was waiting to pay, I watched a woman try to use two coupons to get two free Haagen-Dazs ice cream cups. The staff apologetically refused to accept the coupons. The woman was furious; she finally just grabbed the ice creams without paying and sat down with her husband to eat them. The staff looked at her helplessly. I'm not sure if they took any measures to stop her or not.

I was surprised to see the place serving broccoli. Broccoli is considered a good vegetable in the U.S., mainly because the choices are so limited. But I had never seen broccoli in China before, and, compared to almost any Chinese leafy green vegetable, broccoli is bland and tasteless.

We took an Air China flight to Hangzhou. They served dinner. It was quite disappointing compared to the food we got on China Eastern the last time we were in China. The vegetables were green beans, carrots, and cabbage just the way you get in the frozen food section in the U.S. Again, I had never seen these vegetables in China before. What's going on? Why are they serving this kind of food in China?
